ESA cancels physical E3 2022 event

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) this week confirms that it will no longer be hosting E3 2022, at least a physical event. In a statement shared on its official website, the ESA pins the cancellation on exactly what you were expecting:

"Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022. We remain incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon."

The coronavirus pandemic continues to cast a long shadow over current affairs, and the rise (and spread) of the Omicron variant has triggered to a new round of quarantine and lockdown recommendations worldwide. The latter part of the ESA's announcement suggests that the trade organization might attempt a last-minute digital "online-only" event like it did with E3 2021.
